British Heroes and Villains

Happy Halloween! London has a rich history of baddies and champions such as Florence Nightingale and Jack the Ripper with tours and exhibits dedicated to them. Here are some legendary British heroes and villains:


Legend #1: William Booth

Salvation Army was founded by William & Catherine Booth

William Booth was an English Minister who founded The Salvation Army with his wife Catherine Booth. William lost his father at the age of 14 and became a traveling evangelist with the Methodist church. This experience inspired Catherine and William to start The Salvation Army on July 2, 1865 in London.


Legend #2: Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper

The Whitechapel Murderer, AKA Jack the Ripper, is an infamous serial killer who killed at least 5 people from 1888-1891. Most of his assaults involved women, typically sex workers, in the Whitechapel neighborhood located at the East End of London. There were other murders that occurred in this area during that time period, however, law enforcement was unable to connect all of the killings that took place in 1888. The murders had a significant impact to society due to the brutal nature of the killings and extraordinary media coverage.


Legend #3: Florence Nightingale


"The Lady with the Lamp" Florence Nightingale

Nurse and heroine, Florence Nightingale was a mover and shaker who had a major impact on modern nursing. A statistician, social reformer, manager and trainer, “The Lady with the Lamp” is credited with reducing the number of deaths by enhancing hygienic and living conditions. Florence was also a writer and had several publications on medical knowledge, religion and mysticism.


Legend #4: Sherlock Holmes

The Sherlock Holmes Museum in London

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character created by writer Arthur Conan Doyle. Mr. Holmes is a famous detective who lived in London skilled at surveillance, analysis, forensic science and logic. Even though he isn't a real person, Sherlock Holmes is a worldwide phenomenon starring in thousands of movies, publications and productions. He's also listed as the most depicted human literacy character by Guinness World Records.
