There are lots of ways to help the planet while traveling
There are lots of ways to help the planet while traveling

Sustainability has been a hot topic for some time to maintain our planet for future generations and I understand why:

  • Focusing on sustainability helps the planet in the long term for humans and other species such as planets, water, etc.

  • It builds on social equality and unity

  • Protects life needing things such as the environment and water

Let's put on our capes and discuss ways to promote sustainability while traveling:

1. Travel with a non-plastic reusable bottle

Using alternatives to plastic such as aluminum is a simple way to travel sustainably.
Using alternatives to plastic such as aluminum is a simple way to travel sustainably.

There is a lot of plastic throughout the world that impacts marine ecosystems. From water bottles to bags, countries throughout the world have taken actions to reduce their waste by promoting glass bottles and reusable carrying totes. Travel sustainably by carrying a reusable bottle made of aluminum or glass as an alternative. Many airports throughout the world have clean water filling stations to help you stay hydrated and some countries such as Switzerland have high water quality that meets stringent regulations for safety and hygiene.

2. Use sustainable travel options

Trains are a great way to travel sustainably
Trains are a great way to travel sustainably

One of the best ways to travel sustainably is by using "slow travel" modes such as trains. Many destinations have trains such as London, Paris, United States, India and China that provide a unique view of your destination as well as help reduce carbon dioxide, also referred to CO2. In addition, if flying, choose airlines that value and practice sustainability. In June 2024, Sustainability Magazine published an article of the top 10 sustainable airplanes throughout the world:

#10: American Airlines

#9: EasyJet

#8: Air Canada

#7: Cathay Pacific

#6: Virgin Atlantic

#5: British Airways

#4: Alaska Airlines

#3: JetBlue Airways

#2: Delta Airlines

#1: United Airlines

3. Engage in Eco-Friendly Exercise

Yoga is a great eco-friendly exercise that can be done in-person or virtually

A great way to maintain wellness, stay fit and help the environment is by practicing eco-friendly exercises. Some exercises that help reduce natural resources include outdoor running, hiking, walking, yoga and bodyweight routines such as burpees and abdominal crunches. There are many options for exercise virtually that can be done anywhere in the world with an internet connection. Prana Yoga + Wellness offers 1-hour virtual "donation yoga" where 100% of donations go towards a scholarship fund for aspiring yoga teachers.

4. Use sustainable tour operators

Another great way to promote sustainability is by looking up environmentally friendly tour operators. There are many tour companies ranging from local, national and international operators offering packages to various destinations. Travel Stride has a list of sustainable global tour companies throughout the world including:

5. Choose alternatives to wildlife products

Never support purchasing souvenirs made from animals

One of the best ways to help our animal species is by not getting souvenirs made from wildlife. From fur, shells and bird feathers, throughout the world you may come across traffickers who hunt endangered and rare species for profit. For souvenir options, consider purchasing from places that are environmentally friendly to protect the planet for many years to come.
